The Boston Red Sox are in the final stretch of the season and are getting healthy at the right time.
Most fans are paying close attention to Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa's returns, but Garrett Whitlock is also on the mend. He threw a bullpen session on Sunday, and the team revealed that they plan on having him throw a live batting practice on Wednesday at LoanDepot Park, per MassLive's Christopher Smith.
“See how that goes and how he feels and if we’re able to activate him after that,” Tracy said.
“Obviously getting out on the field and facing some hitters, even if it’s not a rehab game, is important,” Tracy added. “So he’ll do that Wednesday.”
Whitlock has a 2.05 ERA in 45 games this year. He allowed three runs in his last seven outings after previously allowing just two runs in the 19 outings before that. He was placed on the injured list with elbow soreness, and his return will be huge for the Red Sox.
Trade acquisition Erik Miller has not allowed an earned run in his last 23 outings, and adding Whitlock back into the mix will give the Red Sox a bullpen that features Miller, Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman for the final stretch of the year. The Red Sox bullpen has the best ERA in baseball this year, and it is a group capable of making a huge impact in October.
