The New York Mets fired Carlos Mendoza this season, and Andy Green has transitioned from the front office to the interim manager role.

The Mets are 23-23 under Green, but they will likely miss the postseason. Will Green be back as the manager next year?

"I'm going to take him at face value," Mets owner Steve Cohen said on Wednesday. "He's telling us that he wants to go back to the front office. We're going to do a managerial search and if it turns out he wants us to throw his hat into the ring, that would be great."

It sounds like Green has told the team that he wants to return to his old role. However, things could change between now and the end of the season. If Green does not want to manage, the Mets will have to find someone else to lead their team.

Alex Cora could be a name to keep an eye on. He is a World Series-winning manager, but is reportedly a favorite to take over in Philadelphia. Don Mattingly has been the interim manager for the Philadelphia Phillies and has the team in postseason position after a terrible start to the season under Rob Thomson.

If Cora ends up in Philadelphia, the Mets could pivot to Mattingly if he wants to continue managing. Mattingly has managed in 13 seasons and is a former Manager of the Year Award winner.

Regardless of who the Mets hire, they will expect results. If they miss the postseason this year, it will be back-to-back seasons. That's unacceptable for a team with their payroll, especially after signing Juan Soto before the 2025 season.
