The future is bright for the Boston Red Sox. That's the early takeaway from the Double-A debut Tuesday of top outfielder prospect Justin Gonzales.
Leading off and playing right field for the Portland Sea Dogs, Gonzales went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the 7-5 win over the Reading Fightin Phils. And he got the party started early, hitting a single up the middle to start the bottom of the first inning.
Gonzales is the Red Sox's No. 2 prospect behind infielder Franklin Arias and No. 79 overall, according to MLB Pipeline.
The 19-year-old started the 2026 season with Single-A Greenville, where he quickly dominated. Gonzales hit .271 with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and .854 OPS in 89 games, earning Tuesday's promotion to Double-A Portland.Looking for the perfect gift for a baseball player in your life? MLB Pipeline reports the 6-5 Gonzales signed with the Red Sox in January of 2024 for $250,000 as international free agent and estimates his big-league debut will come in 2028.
But that timeline could be accelerated, if MLB Pipeline's scouting report proves true:
"Gonzales has some of the best bat-to-ball skills and perhaps the most raw power in the system ... His bat speed and considerable strength generate huge exit velocities ... If he can improve the path of his right-handed swing and curb his pull-happy tendencies, reducing his rolled-over grounders and driving the ball in the air more frequently, he could produce 30 or more homers per season. ... More athletic and agile than most players his size, Gonzales can flash average speed once he gets going and steal an occasional base ... One of Boston's most gifted position prospects also has outstanding makeup, yet he comes with a huge amount of variance -- a ceiling as an All-Star right fielder and a floor as a hit-over-power first baseman."
