The Yankees have yet to have Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, Carlos RodΓ³n and Cam Schlittler in the rotation together.
Just as RodΓ³n was supposed to return, the team announced that Fried is going on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow bone bruise, retroactive to Friday. RodΓ³n is supposed to make his return from the injured list on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles.
Fried's injury is certainly something to worry about. He spent time on the injured list earlier this year with the same injury and missed over two months. It's unclear how serious the injury is this time, but if he were to miss two months at this point, his season would be over.
Obviously, the Yankees want Fried pitching for them now and through October, but his move to the injured list does save them from making a decision on which starter will move to the bullpen, at least for now. With RodΓ³n returning, the Yankees hoped to have Cole, Schlittler, RodΓ³n, Fried and either Will Warren or Ryan Weather in the rotation.
With Fried down, Weathers and Warren will both remain in the rotation. Aaron Boone will meet with the media on Tuesday and likely provide an update on where things stand with Fried. The Yankees have maintained a strong record despite many key injuries, but the goal now is to get healthy and gear up for a deep run in October.
