The Milwaukee Brewers are not usually aggressive at the trade deadline, but this year they reportedly made a strong push for Tarik Skubal.
Skubal obviously ended up being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Brewers reportedly made an offer centered around Luis Peรฑa, the No. 21 prospect in all of baseball. However, many reports suggest that the Detroit Tigers wanted young starting pitcher Logan Henderson to be included, and that was too high a price for the Brewers.
At the time, fan bases were upset that the Brewers let a second-year pitcher get in the way of keeping Skubal off the Dodgers, but on Sunday, Henderson showed why the Brewers are so high on him. He took the mound against Skubal as the Brewers looked to win the season series over the Dodgers.
Henderson went seven innings for the first time since the JuCo World Series in 2021. He struck out six batters, and the only run he conceded to the Dodgers ' star-studded lineup was a solo homer by All-Star Max Muncy. Skubal allowed two runs in six innings and walked two batters. He had seven strikeouts.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner eclipsed 100 pitches for the first time this season and still had a great game, but Henderson proved he is an elite starter as well. Unlike Skubal, Henderson is under club control through 2031. He has a 2.70 ERA through 12 starts, and as it stands right now, he would likely start postseason games for the Brewers.
The Brewers seem destined to face Skubal and the Dodgers again in October, but after securing the season series behind Henderson's gem, they may be seeing him in Milwaukee next time.
