Roman Anthony has missed most of the season with a torn ligament below his right ring finger.
When Anthony went down, the Red Sox season was headed in the wrong direction. However, a 15-game winning streak and another long winning streak have the Red Sox in position to make the postseason. That means activating Anthony is worth it.
In recent weeks, he has started progressing and hitting. He is hitting off a Trajekt machine, seeing some higher velocity, and Chad Tracy recently said he is getting close to starting a rehab assignment. How soon that will be remains to be seen.
"Chad Tracy said Roman Anthony continues to swing off the Trajekt in Fort Myers, and said he could begin a rehab assignment relatively soon," The Boston Globe's Alex Speier wrote on Bluesky. "He wanted to avoid specific dates for when that might occur, but said it likely wouldn’t be this weekend."
Anthony's return is not imminent, but a rehab assignment does not seem far off.
"Chad Tracy said that Roman Anthony has a perfect setup in Fort Myers and doesn't necessarily need to go to Boston before going to an affiliate," MLB.com's Ian Browne said. "It wouldn't surprise me if Anthony is playing in the Minors next week."
