Willson Contreras is having a career year, but this month has not been so kind to him.
He is hitting .185 this month. Between that, the situation with Jarren Duran, playing through illness and boos from Red Sox fans for not running out a grounder, a lot is going wrong. However, he hit a home run on Wednesday and seemed to be breaking out of his slump. He spoke to the media for the first time since he spoke in Sacramento following the Duran situation.
He was asked about the fans booing him recently.
"Something’s bothering my leg," Contreras said, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. "That’s why I didn’t run the other day when the fans booed me. Man, didn’t run one time and they boo anybody. Which is good. But I don’t care. I think it’s part of baseball. They have the right to boo, they have to yell, they have a right to do everything."
Contreras has always found himself in headlines. He plays with a ton of passion and is always seemingly in the middle of any fights or arguments on the field. However, he knows that's simply who he is, and does not take the fans booing to heart.
He knows that the team needs to start playing better to break out of this losing streak. He is committed to winning, and on multiple occasions has noted how he loves being on the Red Sox. Without him, there is no way the Red Sox could have saved their season.
He is hitting .280 this year and has a career-best .919 OPS. He was an All-Star and will look to help lead the team through October.
