With their season already doomed, the Los Angeles Angels parted ways with several members of their coaching staff prior to Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers.
The Angels fired three pitching coaches, relieving pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti of their duties. Los Angeles named Tim Leveque as interim pitching coach and Michael Wuertz as interim bullpen coach.
Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak explained that he felt a change was needed after learning that the fired coaches were not using the technology available to them to the best of their ability.
It's been another rough season for Los Angeles, which is 28 games below .500 and owns the worst record in baseball. The Angels are headed for their 11th straight losing season and 12th consecutive year without a playoff berth.
Their poor pitching staff is a big reason why, as they have MLB's seventh-worst ERA and have issued the most walks in the Majors.
This was Maddux's first season with Los Angeles' coaching staff, so it's surprising how quickly the team decided that he wasn't a fit. Time will tell if the Angels' new pitching coaches can help the staff improve down the stretch.
