Luis Gil has been on the injured list since May 8, but he was not with the Yankees for most of the season even when he was healthy.

Gil did not start the season on the Opening Day roster, but that was by design. He was activated and made four starts before he was optioned again. He had a 6.05 ERA in four starts, and the team decided to send him down. He wound up on the injured list with a shoulder injury in May.

According to Yankees insider Gary Phillips, Gil will start a rehab assignment with High-A Hudson Valley. It's unclear whether he will factor into the Yankees' plans, especially given how strong their rotation has been, but he could find his way back to the big leagues.

Soon, the Yankees will have a rotation of Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Carlos RodΓ³n and Will Warren or Ryan Weathers. Simply put, there is no room for Gil in the rotation. However, if he can pitch like he has in the past, he could be an option out of the bullpen.

Gil is a talented pitcher. He won the American League Rookie of the Year in 2024 and had a 3.50 ERA coming into the season. The 28-year-old righty was expected to be a key player for the Yankees this season, but it has not worked out that way. It will be important for him to pitch well during his rehab assignment if he wants a shot in the big leagues again.

He could be an interesting option as a long reliever given his background as a starter.
