The Boston Red Sox have made a lot of good moves over the last two years, but there have been some questionable ones as well.
One that the Red Sox's front office is likely regretting is the trade that sent lefty reliever Bernardino to the Colorado Rockies before the 2026 season.
Boston traded Bernardino to the Rockies in exchange for infielder/outfielder Braiden Ward. Ward impressed throughout Spring Training and is an intriguing depth option to have in the organization. He has blazing speed that definitely could help the club down the stretch in a pinch-running role, especially in the postseason.
While this is the case, having Bernardino on the roster right now would've been better.
Bernardino has been lights-out for the Rockies this season. The 34-year-old has a 2.64 ERA in 55 total outings, to go along with a 36-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 47 2/3 innings pitched. On top of this, he's under team control through the 2029 season.
So, the Red Sox traded a legit, high-leverage left-handed reliever for a guy who doesn't have much of a path to consistent playing time in the majors, barring a handful of injuries.
Again, the Red Sox have done a lot of good over the last two years, but the Bernardino deal was a miss.
