The New York Yankees are very much contenders in the American League, despite some injuries and underperforming star players.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. came into the season talking about winning an MVP Award and having a 50-50 season. However, he is hitting .216 with a .690 OPS.
"It's super frustrating when you know your abilities and you go out there and you go in the cage and work every day, and it's just not coming together in the game," Chisholm told New York Daily News's Gary Phillips on Sunday. "You just gotta keep on going and push through it."
Chisholm was an All-Star last year, putting together a 30-30 season. Before the season, he made it clear that he wanted to stay with the Yankees past this year, but no extension has been agreed to. His struggles this year certainly add some question marks to his Yankees future.
He will be a free agent after the year ends and could generate interest from many teams, despite a down year. However, he has definitely cost himself some money. The Yankees may have no choice but to keep him around given the state of their infield.
Anthony Volpe would seemingly be in line to play second base if Chisholm walked, and that might be a disaster. It seems like Chisholm still wants to be a Yankee, and his struggles seem more like a single down year than a trend. This year is certainly an outlier in a solid seven-year run.
Chisholm could right all wrongs by turning things around for the final stretch and having a strong October.
