The Boston Red Sox filled a huge hole at catcher at the trade deadline, and there are very few holes on the roster right now.
Left field and shortstop may be the only real positions of concern for the Red Sox right now. Roman Anthony returning will set the Red Sox up in the outfield, but shortstop is still a question mark. Andruw Monasterio has played well, and Isiah Kiner Falefa and Trevor Story are nearing rehab assignments, per Craig Breslow on Monday.
However, Breslow also mentioned top prospect Franklin Arias as part of the solution at shortstop, alluding to him when talking about the depth at shortstop.
“That’s a number of major-league shortstops and a really exciting young player, so we feel pretty good about where we are there,” Breslow said of the team's shortstop depth, per The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.
Arias is already in Triple-A and is seen as one of the best prospects in all of baseball. He seems to be the shortstop of the future, and Breslow was asked if fans could expect to see him in Boston this season.
“I hate to put those types of expectations on a 20-year-old,” Breslow said. “What I am very excited to say is that every challenge that he has faced, he’s met, which is pretty incredible for someone his age and what he’s done at each level. I just feel like we’ll continue to take note of what he’s doing. We’ll continue to put him in the best development environment that we can, and if he is the person who can help us, then we’ll have that conversation when it comes time.”
Arias has only played in seven Triple-A games and is hitting just .233. He does have two home runs, but he still needs more time in Triple-A. However, if he gets the bat going, it would not be crazy to see him called up in September.
