The Los Angeles Angels were sellers before Monday's trade deadline, and they are not done moving on from players.
According to Mike Rodriguez, the team is designating Jorge Soler for assignment. Soler is a two-time World Series champion and was the 2021 World Series MVP. Soler has played in 86 games this season and has primarily played as a designated hitter.
He has just 12 home runs this year, so his power numbers are not exactly great. However, there could still be some teams interested in adding him. He could be a decent bench bat for a power-needy team, especially if that team needs power from the right side.
Soler was fourth on the Angels in home runs, so moving on will create a hole at designated hitter. The team also traded away the third-best home run hitter on the team in Jo Adell.
The Milwaukee Brewers are dead last in home runs this year, but have the best record in baseball. They did not add any bats at the deadline outside of Bo Naylor, who is in Triple-A. Soler could be a solid bat on the bench for them, especially with Christian Yelich struggling at designated hitter for over a month now.
The Cleveland Guardians are currently in wild card position and could use a player like Soler. Rhys Hoskins has not had a great year, and Soler could give them another option at designated hitter. Soler may not be having the best season, but a change of scenery and playing for a competitive team could help get him back on track.
In 2024, he was traded back to the Atlanta Braves from the San Francisco Giants, and his OPS with Atlanta was 100 points higher than his OPS in San Francisco. He could see a similar uptick with a new team this year. Even if he plays at a similar level, he has proven to be a postseason riser.
He has a 1.027 career OPS in the postseason and seven home runs.
