The Chicago Cubs made a trade deadline splash on Sunday by reportedly trading two prospects to the Toronto Blue Jays for Kevin Gausman.
Gausman, 35, is in the final season of his five-year contract before hitting free agency this winter. With the Blue Jays last in the AL East, they were willing to part ways with the two-time All-Star.
The veteran righty has taken a step back this season, going 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. That would be his worst ERA since 2019.
He's remained durable, however, leading the Major Leagues with 23 starts. His 3.51 FIP also indicates that he's been a bit unlucky this year.
Meanwhile, the defending AL champs are expected to receive shortstop y Southisene and Brett Bateman in return. Both were top 30 propsects in the Cubs organizatiton, with Southisene in High-A and Bateman in Triple-A.
With Chicago second in the NL Central, Gausman could be an asset for them down the stretch and in the playoffs, as he owns a career 3.83 ERA in 56 1/3 postseason innings.
