The MLB Trade deadline is less than a week away, and three American League East teams are all interested in Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"Three AL East clubs — the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees — are among the teams expressing varying interest in Goodman, according to people briefed on the Rockies’ conversations but granted anonymity to speak freely," Rosenthal wrote on Thursday.
The Yankees may be the most desperate for Goodman thanks to injuries to the rest of their offense. They are trying to catch the Rays in the standings without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger right now. Austin Wells has not been good at the plate this year, and Goodman would represent a significant upgrade.
The Red Sox have battled back from the bottom of the American League to be in a position to buy. They look like a completely different team right now, and have their sights set on passing the Yankees and Rays in the division. Connor Wong has played well, but Carlos Narváez has been a disappointment. Goodman is having a phenomenal season and could be the new everyday catcher in Boston.
The Rays have bigger holes than catcher in their lineup, but Goodman would certainly help them overall. They are trying to hold on to the top spot in the AL, and Goodman would be much better than Nick Fortes. The Rays might not be as willing to trade a haul for Goodman, knowing that they have holes in the middle infield and the outfield.
Goodman has been an All-Star for two straight seasons and has 31 home runs this year. He has already matched last season's total. He has multiple seasons of control and could single-handedly change an offense, but he will not be cheap.
