The trade deadline is less than a week away, which means the Philadelphia Phillies have very little time to solidify a roster that can win the World Series.
The Phillies could use some help in the outfield and a backend starting pitcher to go with the elite top of their rotation. According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, an American League East club is emerging as a potential trade partner.
"The (Toronto) Blue Jays & Phillies are emerging as trade partners, as I reported on MLB Network," Morosi wrote on X on Thursday. "Philly has multiple needs. Toronto has available veterans in those areas: (Kevin) Gausman, (Shane) Bieber, (Jeff) Hoffman, (George) Springer, (Daulton) Varsho. As spring complex neighbors, Jays execs know Phillies prospects well."
The Phillies need to find a way to add to their offense. Adding a designated hitter seems out of play since they have Kyle Schwarber. However, a first baseman or outfielder could be in play. Outside of Brandon Marsh, the Phillies outfield has been bad. They could add a first baseman and move Bryce Harper to right field. Or they could simply go after Varsho.
Gausman and Bieber are not having the best years, but either one would present an upgrade over the Phillies' current No. 5 starter options. Both will be free agents after the season and the Blue Jays would be wise to trade them.
As for Hoffman, he has struggled since joining the Blue Jays and cost them a World Series last year. He was an All-Star when he was with the Phillies, and a reunion to be Jhoan Duran's setup man could be great for both parties.
