Clay Holmes was a two-time All-Star for the New York Yankees before he signed with the New York Mets.
With the Yankees, Holmes was an elite reliever, but he established himself as a starter in Queens. He had a 3.63 ERA in 31 starts last season and a 2.39 ERA through nine starts this year. He took a comebacker off the leg and fractured his fibula, but is currently on a rehab assignment. According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon and Katie Woo, the Yankees were among the teams that scouted his last rehab start.
A reunion with Holmes would make some sense for the Yankees. They already have Gerrit Cole, Cam Schlittler, Max Fried and Carlos Rodón. Rodón is hurt right now, but should be back soon. Holmes would be an upgrade over Will Warren and Ryan Weathers as the final starter in the rotation.
Holmes threw four scoreless innings in his last rehab start, and according to The Athletic, two executives think he is ready to return to the big leagues. Before his injury, he was getting a ton of ground balls, as he always does.
The Yankees' offense is really struggling right now, so an elite rotation would certainly take some pressure off of them. Holmes as the No. 5 starter is a great spot to be in if the Yankees do choose to reunite with him. He has a $12 million player option for next year, so his contract is not going to hold the Yankees back.
If he declines, the Yankees are still in a good spot in terms of the rotation. If he chooses to accept his option, the Yankees would be getting a solid starter at a very affordable price.
