The Los Angeles Dodgers figure to get Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani back in the rotation soon, but are still scouting big league starters before the trade deadline.
The Dodgers' playoff rotation could feature Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Ohtani, Snell and Glasnow, with Justin Wrobleski, Roki Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan and Eric Lauer moving to the bullpen potentially. They do not really need a starter, but the injury history for some of their guys is a cause for concern. According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon and Katie Woo, the Dodgers were among the teams in attendance for Clay Holmes' last rehab start.
"According to two executives who watched his latest rehab appearance on Tuesday night, Mets starter and trade candidate Clay Holmes 'looked big-league ready,'" wrote The Athletic on Wednesday. "Scouts from the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks were among those who flocked to Dunedin, Fla., to evaluate Holmes, out since mid-May after a fibula fracture."
Holmes signed with the Mets to be a starter before last season and posted a 3.53 ERA. He was looking really good this year through nine starts, posting a 2.39 ERA. His arm is pretty fresh after being sidelined for months. His freak injury may have actually added some trade value.
He has a $12 million player option for next season, and it would not be a surprise to see him decline that if he finishes out the year strong. He has established himself as a quality starting pitcher and could be in line for a raise.
He has thrown 6 1/3 innings across two rehab starts this month. He has allowed two earned runs and five hits. Nearly 59% of his pitches have been for strikes, and his next big league start could come for a different team. If the Dodgers were to acquire him, they would have to bump someone out of the rotation and potentially move Holmes to the bullpen in October. He is a two-time All-Star as a reliever.
