Trade season is here in Major League Baseball, and the Boston Red Sox have already made a big move by adding Curtis Mead.
While Mead is a solid option who could end up taking over their everyday role at second base, the Red Sox have other holes to address. ESPN's Jeff Passan noted on Monday that there will be more moves by Boston.
"There will be more," Passan said on Threads in response to a question about whether the Red Sox were done. "Not sure how big of a splash, but they're too engaged in other places to think something won't come together."
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox are looking for a shortstop. Could that be their next target before the deadline? Relievers are always a hot commodity at this point of the year, so perhaps the Red Sox could get involved in the reliever market. Regardless, Craig Breslow has assets at both the big league and minor league level to deal from.
Figuring out whether Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony will return could be key in the Red Sox's plans. If both players figure to miss the rest of the year, a rental starting pitcher or hitter would make plenty of sense. Adding another middle infielder seems like the most likely scenario given the uncertainty around Trevor Story's return, and the fact that he was struggling offensively even before his injury.
Marcelo Mayer could return to give the Red Sox some more help up the middle, but like Story, he was struggling at the plate before getting hurt. The Red Sox could also explore an upgrade at catcher. Hunter Goodman may be a player they target. Goodman has 31 homers this year and has been named an All-Star in back-to-back seasons. He is under club control through 2029 and would be a great addition.
