The New York Yankees trade deadline plans may have changed quite a bit in the last 48 hours.
With Cody Bellinger on the injured list now, adding an outfielder may be a sudden priority. Aaron Judge's return timeline is still unclear, and the Yankees must feel some pressure to make a move, knowing that they are capable of winning the American League even without Judge this year.
Last year, the Yankees decided to shore up the bullpen at the trade deadline, but they need hitters this year.
"That’s above my pay grade,” Judge said when asked about the team's needs. “We’ve got a good team where we’re at. That’s our job as players, to give the front office the ability to get the final pieces. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.”
Right now, all Judge can do is watch. The superstar outfielder has been out since the start of June. Judge had 17 home runs through 59 games and was named an All-Star. The Yankees know that if he returns, he is capable of single-handedly getting the offense on track. However, they need to ensure they stay afloat while they wait for his return.
An outfielder like Lane Thomas could be a fit for the Yankees with Bellinger and Judge out. Judge acknowledged that the team is not going to be able to replace Bellinger. However, the team's depth paired with a move at the deadline could be enough to keep things rolling while he recovers.
The Yankees are also reportedly exploring catching upgrades at the deadline.
