The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to get back to the World Series, and they may need to add some relievers to make that happen.
In the last few postseasons, the Phillies' bullpen has cost them late in games. They have an elite pitcher in Jhoan Duran for the ninth inning, but they need some leverage arms to bridge the gap between him and their starter. There should be some solid options available at the deadline, but the Phillies may be interested in a familiar face.
"They are in desperate need of a late-inning reliever, and would love to bring back Jeff Hoffman of the Toronto Blue Jays," wrote USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
Hoffman has had a rough go of things in Toronto. He had a 4.37 ERA last season, and blew a save in Game 7 of the World Series. The team was two outs away from winning the Fall Classic before Hoffman gave up a game-tying home run to Miguel Rojas.
This year, Hoffman has a 4.40 ERA, so he isn't exactly a great option on paper. However, the Phillies may know they can fix him. He has been an All-Star once in his career, and it was with the Phillies in 2024. He had a 2.17 ERA that season and recorded 10 saves.
He has played in 122 games for the Phillies and has a 2.28 ERA and 158 strikeouts. He won't be a free agent until after the 2027 season, and he may be a cheap acquisition for the Phillies. They may want to expend more resources on acquiring a right-handed bat or outfielder.
