The New York Yankees have been without Giancarlo Stanton since they placed him on the injured list with a calf strain in April.
Earlier this week, Aaron Boone was asked about when Stanton could return, and he said there was "no timeline" for his return, per Yankees insider Bryan Hoch. Many assumed this meant Stanton wasn't close and that the Yankees would be without him for the year. However, Boone later appeared on "Talkin Yanks" to say that he did not mean for people to think Stanton would not be back just because there is no timeline.
On Wednesday, Boone was asked to clarify once again where things stand with Stanton.
"He's in his running progression now," Boone told reporters on Wednesday. "I don't have a timeline. I don't know when he gets to the end of that and what we do to get him back, but feel like he's moving in a good direction. I just don't know if that's a couple weeks from now, a few weeks from now, whatever it is, but he's getting much closer."
Barring a setback, it sounds like Stanton will return at some point. The American League is weak this year, and despite the Yankees struggling on offense for about a month, they still have the second most wins in the AL. Getting Stanton back, and hopefully Aaron Judge as well, should get the offense right again as well.
Stanton notably does not prefer to go on rehab assignments, and prefers to just work in the cage before going back into game action. However, with a calf injury, the Yankees may find it better to send him to play in some minor league games before inserting him back into the lineup.
When healthy, he can still be a major home run threat, and his postseason run in 2024 showcases exactly why the Yankees need him. He can change games with one swing of the bat.
