That rumbling sound you hear in Detroit is the MLB rumor mill moving into the next gear regarding the chances of left-hander Tarik Skubal hitting the road before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Clearly the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner is the best pitcher being dangled to contenders.

After all, Detroit enters play Tuesday just 6.5 games back in the AL Central and 4.5 games out in the AL Wild Card standings.

So here's the latest intel from some of MLB's best insiders.

ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel reported Tuesday that there is a 60% chance of the Tigers trading Skubal.

"His future depends on whether the Tigers can muster a run at an American League playoff spot," the duo wrote.

"Considering the hole they've dug themselves, they are far more likely than not to move Skubal -- beyond their 4Β½-game deficit for the final wild card, they are behind six other teams -- and they will squeeze every ounce of value out of the best pitcher in the world. He is the dream deadline candidate, the sort of ace who can carry a team in the postseason. Whoever lands Skubal will pay an enormous price. Happily," Passan and McDaniel noted.

In terms of "realistic" best fits, the pair named the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays.

However USA Today's Bob Nightengale predicted Skubal will be staying put in Detroit.

"Skubal, the defending two-time AL Cy Young winner, realizes his fate depends on how the Tigers fare these next weeks. If they keep winning – and they're 24-15 since June 1 – he’s staying," Nightengale reported Tuesday.

CBS Sports' Mike Axisa predicted Tuesday the Dodgers will win the Skubal sweepstakes. But colleagues Dayn Perry and Matt Snyder don't think the 29-year-old will be going anywhere.

And then there's FanSided's Robert Murray, who on Friday best summed up the rumors of a potential Skubal deal: "it’s anyone’s guess."
