The New York Mets acquired Freddy Peralta in the offseason, but considering how the season has gone, the Mets could look to trade him.
Peralta is a few months away from free agency, and the Mets could look to get something out of him in a lost season. Peralta is having a down year, and funny enough, one of the teams potentially looking to add a starter at this deadline is the Milwaukee Brewers.
Peralta has a 4.66 ERA and will start against his former club on Monday. The Brewers just lost Brandon Woodruff for the season, and without him, their postseason rotation could end up featuring Brandon Sproat, Shane Drohan, Robert Gasser or Lance McCullers Jr. alongside Jacob Misiorowski and Kyle Harrison. Those options are not bad, but rather inexperienced and inconsistent. With Peralta trade rumors flying around, the Brewers may be one of the few teams that can get him back on track thanks to the familiarity.
"That's not my job," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said when asked if he would push his front office to go get Peralta. "My job isn't to push anybody. Anybody in baseball would want Freddy Peralta in their clubhouse. He's that impactful a guy.
Murphy has always spoken highly of his former ace and seems to still think highly of him. Peralta may not be having an All-Star season, but the Brewers are the team that made him the pitcher he is, and do not come with the pressures of a huge market like the Mets do. Murphy admitted that it's rare for a player to get traded back to the team that just traded him, but noted that adding Peralta would certainly be something he welcomes.
"No one would turn down Freddy Peralta," Murphy said on Monday. "Of course, everyone here would be ecstatic."
Peralta seems like a lock to be dealt at this year's deadline. Many teams may be wary given his woes this year, but the Brewers may not be one of those teams. He is only making $8 million this year, and the Brewers would surely have to send back less than what they got for him at this point.
