The San Diego Padres are 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, and selling may be a reality for them at the trade deadline.
If the Padres dfo decide to sell, Mason Miller is certainly a player who could net them multiple young assets. According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, the Yankees "love" the idea of adding Miller. He has three more years of club control and is one of the best relievers in baseball.
Padre general manager A.J. Pellar recently said that he wants Miller to be around for a long time, but also noted that the team needs to be open-minded at the deadline. Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer proposed this trade between the Yankees and Padres that would land Miller in the Bronx:
- Yankees receive: Mason Miller
- Padres receive: Anthony Volpe, Will Warren and Spencer Jones
The Padres would be getting three controllable big leaguers, which is very valuable. Even though Volpe, Warren and Jones are not necessarily stars, they could benefit from a change of scenery. Warren could end up finding more success in San Diego as a starter, similar to Michael King.
Volpe could really use a change of scenery as well. The pressures of performing in New York may be too much, and a fresh start could do him some good. He was once a prized prospect, and playing in San Diego could help him reach his potential. As for Jones, he is still finding his way in the big leagues, but the power is undeniable. He crushed the ball in Triple-A, and it's only a matter of time before he starts doing the same in the big leagues.
Additionally, trading Volpe would finally open the door for the Yankees to give Jose Caballero the keys to shortstop.
