The Toronto Blue Jays won the American League last year, and after their offseason spending spree, nobody would have believed they would be 2 1/2 games out of a wild card spot at the All-Star break.
However, that's the reality they face, and they have clear needs to fill at the deadline. According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, they want to be buyers at the deadline, and adding an outfielder could be key. Jung Hoo Lee of the San Francisco Giants could be a great target for the Blue Jays.
Nathan Lukes and JesΓΊs SΓ‘nchez have been solid in the outfield for the Blue Jays, but Daulton Varsho has not impressed at the plate. He has a .696 OPS and there is not really a better option available for them right now. Yohendrick PiΓ±ango was alright in his first stint in the big leagues, but was bad against southpaws. Lee has been one of the best hitters in baseball this season, and the Giants may be interested in dumping some of their big contracts amid a disappointing season.
Lee is slashing .302/.333/.429 this year, and was snubbed from the All-Star game. He signed a six-year, $113 million deal in 2023 and has an opt-out after the 2027 season. The Giants would be wise to trade him before his value plummets.
Lee's home run numbers are not great, but he brings great contact skills and does not strike out or whiff a lot. He would be a great addition to the Blue Jays' offense and could be an everyday player right away. Even though the record may not show it now, the Blue Jays have a roster capable of making a deep run, and adding a quality outfielder will help them do that.
