The New York Yankees have been a mess lately, especially defensively.

The sputtering Yankees have lost 12 of their last 15 games, including nine of their last 10. Their offense has disappeared without Aaron Judge, averaging just 2.8 runs per game over their last 17 contests.

While the Bronx Bombers have fallen off a cliff at the plate, they've collapsed in the field as well. New York has committed a staggering 20 errors in its last 15 games, contributing to 29 unearned runs during that stretch.

According to Katie Sharp, that's the most unearned runs allowed by the Yankees in a 15-game stretch since 1935.

New York's shaky fielding cost the team again in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium. Anthony Volpe dropped a grounder in the top of the sixth, leading to two unearned runs.

Yankees radio announcer Suzyn Waldman didn't hold back, ripping the team for its shoddy defense.

β€œYou know, this is what everyone is talking about," Waldman fumed on the WFAN broadcast. "This is why this team is getting booed right now, and why people say they’re not focused. That was their 20th error in their last 15 games.”

Errors happen, but the Yankees have been too lackadaisical and careless in the field lately. Their sloppiness is costing them games, and they can't afford to give away runs and outs with the way they're hitting.

If New York wants to pull out of its skid, it needs to button up on defense and stop making so many preventable mistakes.
