The Toronto Blue Jays are a team that could contend this season in the American League.
The season started off slowly due to injuries, but the Blue Jays have turned their season around. They just swept the Boston Red Sox and now are 37-38 on the season. The American League is vulnerable in general. For example, the New York Yankees are missing Aaron Judge at the moment. It's anyone's guess who is going to get through the American League this year and the Blue Jays have a legit shot, especially if they add another big piece this summer ahead of the trade deadline.
The Blue Jays are never afraid to get bold and one idea that was interesting was the fact that ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel mentioned Toronto among the best fits for Houston Astros All-Star Jeremy Peña.
"Jeremy Peña, SS, Houston Astros," Passan and McDaniel wrote. "Chance of being traded: 35 percent. Rest-of-season impact: High. Years of control: One more year after 2026. The buzz: After nearly signing a contract extension last year, Peña hired agent Scott Boras and put the kibosh on the deal. Now, Houston finds itself in a pickle: always wanting to contend, lacking the roster to do it. Replenishing a bad farm system with few players close to the big leagues takes a move like trading Pena, and the only question at this point is whether it will be before Aug. 3 or before the Dec. 1 lockout. ...
"Best fits: Braves, Rays, Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox."
Peña is making just over $9.4 million this season and has one more season of team control left. The 28-year-old would be a major addition. Should Toronto try to make a move?
