Red Sox Headed Toward A Deadline Decision That Will Divide Fans

The Boston Red Sox aren't where they want to be in the standings right now, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a change is imminent.

Boston is currently 11 games below .500 at 29-40. That means that the Red Sox have 93 games left on the season to try to right the ship. It's certainly not going to be an easy task for a club that hasn't been able to string together wins consistently so far this season and is missing its two top players in Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet.

It's going to be tough, but if you're a Red Sox fan, don't expect to see some sort of fire sale in the near future. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand shared a column about the Red Sox on Tuesday with various nuggets of information about the club in the trade market and noted that chief baseball officer is "likely" to wait another month before deciding whether the club should be a buyer or seller.

"Given the AL Wild Card logjam, the Red Sox are theoretically one winning streak away from thrusting themselves back into that race," Feinsand wrote. "Breslow will likely wait another month before facing a buy-or-sell decision, but the lack of big-time trade chips to move and the number of young regulars on the roster could create a tricky dilemma for Boston’s front office.

“I think that they are going to have to wait to make a call,” an AL executive said. “The arms are more interesting than the position players, but not sure even if they move them that the return will move the needle the way they need it to.”

This arguably is the right call. Things are bad right now, but Boston is one winning streak away from making things interesting, as Feinsand noted.
