The Boston Red Sox aren't going to have Trevor Story on the field for a long time.

On Friday afternoon, the Red Sox announced that Story underwent successful sports hernia repair surgery.

"Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent a successful sports hernia repair. The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at The Vincera Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania," the Red Sox announced.

It has been reported over the last week that Story was seeking multiple opinions on the injury because of the fact that there's a long lay-off after surgery.

Tim Healey of The Boston Globe noted that it could be between six and 10 weeks until Story is back in the mix.

"Breaking: Trevor Story has surgery to fix his sports hernia, the Red Sox announced," Healey wrote. "Story said last week that surgery would require 6-10 weeks to return."

This certainly raises questions for Boston. That's a long stretch that's going to have to figure out shortstop. Marcelo Mayer is the easiest and most obvious solution. He played the position throughout the run in the minors and has been viewed as the shortstop of the future. He started getting some practice reps at the spot after Story went down. If Mayer is the solution at shortstop, what do the Red Sox do at second base? We're going to see a lot of Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Andruw Monasterio, and Nick Sogard, for sure. Romy Gonzalez will be an option at some point.

But the Red Sox need more if they want to be a contender this year. Caleb Durbin is struggling offensively and can't be relied on right now with his bat. So, the club needs to think about both third base and second base.

Boston has a lot of work to do.
