Kristian Campbell's storyline has evolved quite a bit since spring training a year ago.
It was obvious at the time that the Red Sox favored Campbell to win the opening day second base job, which was part of the plan that involved moving Rafael Devers to full-time designated hitter. This year, second base is somewhat unsettled with three weeks to go before the season, but Campbell frankly isn't in the picture.
A move to the outfield has seemingly diminished Campbell's odds of making the team out of camp. But this week is bringing the 23-year-old a major opportunity.
With all four of the Red Sox's primary outfielders headed to participate in the World Baseball Classic, Campbell should start the majority of the games this week and possibly next, giving him the chance to make a lasting impression at the plate.
MLB.com's Ian Browne asserted Sunday that Campbell could either force a discussion about making the opening day roster or put himself in good standing to earn one of the first Triple-A call-ups of the year with a strong showing.
"(Manager Alex) Cora has said numerous times that if Campbell can regain the stroke that made him a top prospect in the game going into last season, the team can find at-bats for him. Bostonβs outfield is left-handed-heavy, so Campbellβs right-handed bat could find its way to Fenway if things break right."
It's been tricky to find Campbell a defensive home, but Cora's point is key. Campbell just needs to hit, and the cards will fall in a way that grants him a second opportunity at the big-league level.
No pressure, but if anyone could use a big finish to camp over the next couple of weeks, Campbell is that player.
